In New York City, as in many U.S. urban centers in the late 1950s, all public displays of homosexual relationships are illegal. Gay bars have evolved into a place where homosexuals, lesbians, and people considered “sex suspects” can socialize in relatively safe situations from public harassment. In the early 1960s, Mayor Robert F. Wagner (Jr.) launched a campaign to eliminate gay bars in New York City. Fearing the city’s public image during the 1964 World’s Fair, officials revoked liquor licenses at gay bars, and police attempted to trap and arrest all gays. In early 1966, the Machine Society, one of the earliest gay rights organizations in the United States, persuaded newly elected mayor John Lindsay to end Wagner’s police trapping campaign.
