Krasner always shows initiative. At a very young age, she decided that the art girl at the gorgeous Owen High School in Manhattan was the only school she wanted to go to because the focus of art at the time was rare. Due to Brooklyn’s residence, Krasner was initially denied access to the school, but eventually she was granted an admission permit. Perhaps ironically, Krasner performed very well in all courses except art, but she passed because of her outstanding performance. During high school, Krasner gave up her name “Lena” and named it “Lenore”, inspired by the role of Edgar Allen Poe. After graduation, Krasner participated in the Cooper Union. She is very popular (although not necessarily academically successful) and is selected into various school offices. In the Cooper Union, she changed her name again, this time Lee: the Americanization (and, in particular, hermaphrodite) version of her Russian name. After attending two art-centered girls’ schools, the idea of being a female artist was not significant for young Krasner. It was not until she went to the National School of Design that she encountered a boycott of her chosen career path. She is irritated by the notion that women sometimes do not do what male artists are allowed to do in this traditional sense.
