In Carlo’s childhood, her family home was painted in soft tones. When Kahlo and her husband, the famous muralist Diego Rivera, remodeled to accommodate their dramatic lifestyle and colourful guests, the surprising cobalt blue came later. In 1937, the couple strengthened the house for the asylum-seeker Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky. The protective grille (painted green) replaced the French balcony. The property was expanded to include an adjacent lot and later made room for a large garden and other buildings. Most of the time they got married, Kahlo and Rivera used Blue House as a temporary retreat, work area and hotel rather than permanent residence. Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera traveled through Mexico and the United States, eventually placing a pair of architects, Juan O’Gorman, near the Blue House.
